A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SELF-CONNECTION

Meditation for beginners: a gentle place to start

Begin connecting inward: witness the thoughts, meet your heart centre and return to the self beneath the stories. A first practice in Beyond Light’s approach.

Meet the self beneath the noise

There is a part of you beneath the stories, expectations and roles you have learned to carry. In Beyond Light’s teachings, meditation is a doorway into that connection: observing what is moving, softening into your heart centre and remembering the love that has never left.

Begin with a brief pause. Sit comfortably, keep your eyes open if you prefer, and let yourself witness rather than force an experience.

Try a gentle first practice

  1. Get comfortable. Sit in a position that feels supported. Notice your feet resting on the floor or your body supported by the chair.
  2. Notice something here. Choose an ordinary sound around you or the sensation of your natural breath. Let breathing happen without trying to make it deeper or slower.
  3. Let thoughts come and go. When your attention wanders, notice that it has happened and gently return to the sound or sensation you chose.
  4. Finish in your own time. Look around the room and notice how you feel before moving into the next part of your day.

For a general introduction to present-moment awareness and wandering thoughts, see the NHS guide to mindfulness. Our spiritual approach is a personal invitation to explore, rather than a promise of a health outcome.

What if my mind will not go quiet?

Thinking does not mean you have failed. For this practice, noticing that you have wandered is part of returning. You can choose a sound instead of your breath, leave your eyes open or simply take a shorter pause. There is no special state you need to achieve.

Return to your heart centre

Bring your attention towards your heart centre. What is there? Warmth, resistance, numbness, emotion? Let yourself witness without judging what appears. Our original teaching invites you to go gently, go slowly and go deep: meeting the layers between you and your own connection, allowing even a flicker of love to be enough.

Is meditation right for everyone?

Not always. Mindfulness can feel unhelpful or make some people feel worse, as the NHS explains. If turning inward feels uncomfortable, pause or stop and choose an ordinary activity that helps you feel oriented to your surroundings. You do not need to push through distress or interpret it as proof of healing. Seek appropriate professional support if you are struggling. Meditation and spiritual practice do not replace medical or psychological care.

Bring one small insight into your day

Afterwards, you might write one sentence: “What do I notice?” or “What do I need today?” There is no right answer. You can also explore three ways to reconnect with yourself and our reflection on bringing reflection into everyday life. Let a practice be useful in everyday life rather than another thing to get perfect.
